Mary Anning was an English fossil (化石) collector, dealer and paleontologist
(古生物学家). Her fossilhunting helped change the way people thought about the world.
Mary was born into a poor family in England on May 21, 1799. She lived in the
seaside town of Lyme Regis, in Dorset. The family had nine children. Only Mary and
her brother Joseph grew up. Mary's father took his children along the beach. They
picked up shells and stones to sell to visitors. Mary did not go to school much. Her
family was too poor. And schools did not teach children about fossils. Mary could
read and write. She taught herself. She learned about rocks and how bodies are made.
In 1811 when Mary and Joseph were hunting fossils, Joseph saw a bone sticking
out of the rock. Mary had a hammer to chip away at the rock. Very carefully she uncovered
it. She found the first complete fossil of the ichthyosaur (鱼龙).
Since then, Mary became crazy about fossilhunting. She liked to hunt on the
beach after a storm. The wind, rain and waves made the rocks crumble. It was easy
to spot fossils. Most days Mary went fossil hunting with her dog, Tray.
Rich friends helped Mary by selling fossils for her. They sent her money.
Scientists wrote letters and came to see her. One good friend was William Buckland,
a professor at Oxford University. Mary also opened a shop to sell fossils, stones
and shells. She chatted with visitors.
Mary Anning died in 1847. How evolution (进化) works was explained by Charles
Darwin not long after Mary's death. Her fossils had helped scientists understand how
things began.

Petra may be the treasure of the world, hidden among mountains. Its most beautiful

nothing on the world that resembles it. The rockcarved (雕刻的) rosered town of
Petra is filled with mysterious_charm;_it had been “designed to strike wonder into
all who entered it”.
Petra is the most wellknown and beautiful site in Jordan that is about 262 km
south of Amman, and 133 km north of Aqaba. The Dead Sea is 80 kilometers north of
it. It was the legacy from the Nabataeans, who settled in the southwest of Jordan
a lot more than 2,000 years back. Because of its excellent culture, buildings and
many water channels, Petra has become a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the
New Seven Wonders of the World and attracts visitors all over the world.
To get there, you must pass through a kilometer long, cool, dark and narrow gorge
(峡谷) whose two high sides keep the sunlight out. Suddenly the gorge opens right
into a natural square covered with Petra's most wellknown monuments (遗址), which
glow in the bright sun. The old town shows the visitors its beautiful look. It leads
people to think about the creativity of the Nabataeans who made Petra as their capital.
Petra flourished for more than 400 years at about the time of Rome until it had
been occupied through the Roman legions in 106 CE. Petra has 800 monuments, including
buildings, tombs, baths, halls, temples, and streets, which were mostly carved in
the pretty sandstone.
Petra sights are in their finest at the beginning of morning and late afternoon.

When I was in college, I remember hearing about a book titled
Looking
Out
for
Number
One. I never read the book, but the title has always stuck with me. I think
it was because the title turned_me_off. I hadn't been taught to be so selfish that
I should focus on only myself. I thought I needed to be helping others and, along
the way, I would also be helping myself. Now, I realise I should have at least
considered learning more about looking out for number one.
Over 30 years after seeing the book about looking out for number one, I'm
realising number one, me, is the person I should be concerned about first. Jeffrey
Gitomer asks the question, “Who is the most important person in the world?” Most
people answer, the customer. He then asks, if there were only two people left in the
world, the customer and you, who would you want to survive? Now the answer is me.
It makes sense that if we can't help ourselves first, we will never be prepared
to help others. We all need to learn to control our lives and make the best decisions
for ourselves. That will put us in a position to help others in the future. But many
of us are slow to understand this.
It has been said that happiness will bring success, but success doesn't always
bring happiness. We all want to be happy and successful. For some of us we can be
very happy when our basic needs are met and our family are safe. Others will seek
for high levels of success thinking that that will bring happiness. I'm sure we can
think of a person who is very successful, according to the world's standards (标准), but they don't appear to be happy at all. This is because they have been so busy
working for somebody else's goals that they haven't considered their own needs.
9.The underlined words “turned me off” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
“________”.
A.made me excited B.made me bored
C.made me surprised D.made me pleased
10.Who does the writer think is the most important person in the world now?
A.Others. B.Himself.
C.The customer. D.Jeffrey Gitomer.
11.From the third paragraph we can learn ________.
A.we should help others instead of ourselves
B.we need help others make the best decisions
C.helping others can help control our lives
D.actually few of us understand this idea earlier
12.Why do some successful people not feel happy at all?
A.Because they don't believe success always brings happiness.
B.Because their basic needs are not completely met.
C.Because they seek for too high levels of success.
D.Because they haven't been working for their own goals.
