When dogs get lonely, they like keeping themselves busy by making a big mess around

the house, and that doesn’t really sit well With their owners. That's Why one German radio

host, who also happens to be a dog owner came up with the idea for a programme designed

to relax dogs and make them feel like they aren't alone.

When 30-year-old Stephan Stock, a radio host at Radio Ton, in Germany's Baden-Württemberg region, announced the creation of a programme aimed at dogs, everyone

thought 11 was Just a clever April Fools trick. However, it wasn't. For the past three and a

half months, Hallo Hasso has been pumping out music for lonely dogs both on the radio and

online.

Stock says he Was inspired to create the special programme by his pet dog, Layla, who

would sometimes get so bored when left alone that s h e would keep herself busy by making

a big mess around the house. He and his colleagues at Radio Ton started researching what

kind of music usually appeals to dogs, and learnt that it should have as little drum and electric

guitar as possible, and should be very slow.

“It’s not about keeping dog s quiet,” Stock said about Hallo Hasso. “It's more about the

dog feeling he's not alone.” He adds that Layla isn’t as restless since listening to

Hallo Hasso, and has become relatively quiet, even letting him take a nap(打盹儿)to the

music from the radio.

Hallo Hasso is only available in Baden-Württemberg, via radio, but if you'd like to see if

it can calm your four legged pet, the programme can also be accessed online here. Just press

the "play" arrow at the top of the page and let the music work its magic. If this doesn’t work,

there's always Dog TV.

As scientists in the Netherlands tried to figure out how a super flying robot, they learned

from one of nature's flyers :the humble fruit fly. And by building this robot, they’ve gained

new understanding of how the fly carries out one of its dangerous tasks.

The robot is called DelFIy Nimble. Its wingspan(冀展)is about a foot wide. It has four

wings that can beat at 17 times per second, which appear very delicate because they’re made

of the same material as space blankets.

“In previous designs, they always had a tail, like a traditional airplane tail,” said the

robot’s main designer Matej Karasck. He's based at the Micro Air Vehicle Laboratory at Delft

University of Technology in the Netherlands, and he and his colleagues published their

findings on Thursday in Science.

“In previous generations,” he said, “ flapping wings drove the robot forward while the tail

helped to guide and stabilize(稳定) it. But now the DelFIy Nimble is completely controlled

by the wings.” “The challenge then was actually combining the control into the wIng

movement, and that’s what we achieved,” Karasek said.

“In the latest generation, the Wings can each move individually or rotate(旋转)around

the body of the robot. The robot can remain in one place in the air for about five minutes on

a full battery or fly for more than a kilometer,” Karasek said, “ and because the scientists are

controlling all the movements, they can use the robot to learn more about how fruit flies

actually carry out !heir dangerous tasks, which has caught the attention Of biologists.”

5. Where did scientists get the creative idea of the flying?

A. From a fruit fly.

B. From the birds' wings.

C. From some fruit.

D. From airplane.

A. A full battery.

B. A flapping wing.

D. The humble fruit fly.

7. What interests biologists most about fruit flies?

A. That they are very tiny insects.

B. How they conduct challenging tasks.

C. Why they can be easily found in the world.

D. That they have light wings and fly quickly.

8. Where is the text probably taken from?

A. A research paper.

B. A travel brochure.

C. A health magazine.

D. A chemistry textbook.

Dolphins live in a dark underwater world. It's often impossible to see each other or

anything else around them, so sound plays an important role in their survival. To

communicate with each other, dolphins produce all kinds of sounds.

Only other dolphins understand what the sounds mean. Scientists haven’t uncovered their

secret communication, except for one kind of whistle(口哨声). It might last less than a

second, but this whistle is a big deal. Why? Because these whistles are actually names of

dolphins and every dolphin has one. Scientists call these sounds a “signature whistle” When

other dolphins hear the whistle, they know which dolphin is calling.

Dolphins often hunt by themselves but still need to stay connected to the group. Since

they can’t always see each

other, dolphins use their signature whistles to check in with other dolphins hundreds of yards

away. “In coastal areas, dolphins exchange whistles even when they're a third of a mile apart,

says Greg Campbell, who studies animals. That means dolphins shout out to group members

that might be nearly five football fields away.

What's amazing is who names the baby dolphin. Not the mother. Not a n auntie dolphin

or another group member.

Scientists believe the baby dolphin itself comes up with the signature whistle. Like human

babies, a baby dolphin plays with sounds throughout its first year. While testing its sound

skills, a baby dolphin doing something amazing. It's creating or figuring out its signature

whistle. How or Why it chooses its signature whistle is not clear. Studies show that most of

the time the signature whistle is nothing like its mother's or group members' Whistles.

When the baby dolphin is about a year old, its signature whistle is set. It repeats it ten

times so the other dolphins learn to recognize lt.

Deciphering(破译)dolphin names just the beginning of figuring out what dolphins

communicate about. Do they chat about sharks? Discuss the tides? Maybe they even have a

name for people. Someday scientists may decipher the rest of dolphins' communication.

9. Sound is important for dolphins because of _________

A. their poor sense of direction

B. their living environment

C. their strong enemies

D. their big groups

10. The dolphin's signature whistle _________

A. lasts a long time

B. can travel long distances

C. is especially helpful in hunting

D. can be recognized by Other animals

11. The author writes the text mainly to _________

A. encourage readers to study dolphins

B. tell readers how dolphins communicate

C. show how lovely and clever dolphins are

D. introduce a special sound made by dolphins
